Rich in culture and blessed with natural landscapes for days, Ecuador may not be the first place you think of for an adventure holiday but hopefully we can change that! With some of the most diverse landscapes in the world in a relatively short amount of space, travelling to Ecuador should be on every adventurer’s list.

Located in the northwest corner of South America, Ecuador is bordered by Columbia to the north and Peru to the south. Blessed with nearly 1,400 miles (or 2,253 kilometres) of Pacific coastline, the equator runs laterally through the north of the country. Coupled with the Ecuadorian Andes acting as a mountainous backbone, Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Think ancient glaciers and soaring peaks, cloud rainforest and subtropical coast. Visiting Ecuador will inevitably start in Quito, the country’s vibrant capital city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in the lee of the Pichincha volcano, this city is considered the cultural capital of South America and provides an excellent introduction to this fascinating country. Spend a few days here before your adventure exploring the narrow streets, unique architecture and warm hospitality of the locals.

Ecuador is perhaps best known for the Galápagos Islands, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, which rest around 621 miles or 1,000 kilometres off the coast, home to some of the rarest species on earth. Less well known are the numerous incredible volcanoes here, 84 in fact, of which Cotopaxi, Cayambe and Chimborazo are a few of the highest in the world. The tallest mountain in Ecuador is Chimborazo at a towering 6,310m high and climbing this mammoth volcano in Ecuador is an unmissable adventure. In fact, any trek in Ecuador that visits the iconic ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’, a belt of endless conical peaks, is a memorable off-the-beaten-track experience.

Whether trekking in the Andes or rambling through the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador is full of beauty. Hike some, or all, of the Quilotoa Loop around the turquoise Quilotoa Crater Lake or try canyoning in the Amazon basin. Raft down the Jatunyacu River or try mountain biking in Baños – there is an exciting activity experience here for all tastes.
