Armenia’s history is fascinating. It boasts quite a few ‘oldest in the world’s’. Take their language for instance, the basis of which was created in 405AD by an Armenian monk. He developed an alphabet consisting of 36 letters that is thought to be one of the most advanced in the world. Armenia was also the first country to officially adopt Christianity and today 97% of the population are Christian. This is one of the reasons why you can find some of the world’s oldest churches and monasteries located in remote natural settings, scattered across Armenia’s countryside. Not to mention there is Yerevan, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Founded by King Argishti in 782BC, it is even older than Rome!

As well as these claims to fame, Armenia is also home to 6 UNESCO World Heritages sites: Haghpat Monastery, Sanahin Monastery, Echmiadzin cathedral and churches, Zvartnots archaeological site, Geghard Monastery and Azat Valley. It became a member of UNESCO in 1992, and today, its UNESCO World Heritage Sites include Christian churches and monasteries which are vital to the nation’s development, attracting pilgrims and visitors for nearly 18 centuries.
